Your questions, answered.
Everything you need to know about your Electronic Travel Authorization, in one place.
What is a Canadian eTA?
An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for most visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport.
How long is my eTA valid?
An eTA is valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can travel to Canada multiple times while it is valid, subject to entry requirements.
How long does approval take?
Most applications are approved within minutes, but some can take several days if additional documents are required. Apply before booking your flight and allow extra time.
Do I need to print my eTA?
No. Your eTA is electronically linked to the passport you used to apply. Bring that same passport when you travel. You can keep your confirmation email for your records.
Do U.S. citizens or Green Card holders need an eTA?
U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents of the United States are exempt. U.S. permanent residents must travel with a valid passport and proof of their permanent resident status.
What does an eTA cost?
The Government of Canada charges CAD $7 for an eTA application. This website provides information and directs you to the official application; it does not charge a processing fee.
